This is much branded as a fearsome and dangerous thing, it is not. But it is there to allow you the dubious pleasure of the Italian authorities being able to allow you 'access' to paying taxes!
It is essential for life here, for major reasons such as buying houses to opening bank accounts to minor burecratic identification.
There are some online 'calculators', but there can be problems with these as the system it not really designed for foreigners and it can struggle to recognise non-Italian information.
