Insurance
Sicilians rarely insure their houses and virtually never insure their home contents. Consequently the domestic insurance market is inflexible and expensive due to lack of competition, there are still some policies available – otherwise there are a number of foreign companies that specialise in property overseas, we will happily put you in touch with these companies.
The Sicilians do take their security very seriously and make their houses look like fortresses with bars on windows and steel doors.
If you have a mortgage from an Italian company, they insist on you having building insurance and there are special restrictions on when these are to be used as holiday homes. For example one quirk is when leaving a home unattended for more than one day, by law you must turn off the water.
Premiums for holiday homes tend to be higher.
