Overview
This is one of Marsala’s oldest surviving examples of a monumental olive press. Its current layout dates back to the 1500s, although the original structure was a watchtower, guarding the African Sea from Trapani down to Mazara. Duke Fici from Florence and the Catalano family later added their stately home, then the servants quarters resulting in the characteristic Baglio internal courtyard layout. Baglio Catalano is situated in tranquil Mediterranean bushland with unobstructed views in all directions. The sea is only 6km (4 miles), the Egadi Islands (West) are always visible and so are Trapani, the district town, and the unmissable outline of Mount Erice, Prophet Muhammad’s Mountain for the Arabs.

External
All four sides of the landlord’s complex are embellished with iron ‘goose chest’ balconies and fine carved stone slabs. The entire property is surrounded by a dry stone enclosure. A former stockyard for animals would make a perfect location for a swimming pool.
The top terrace opens over a majestic view of a three-hundred year old olive orchard, citrus groves and the occasional herd of sheep passing by. There are a number of gardens previously used for fruit, vegetable & herb production. A number of plant species are evident such as orange trees, lemon trees, mulberry and palms. The surrounding area mainly consist of vineyards. Magnificent wild Baglio Catalano benefitted from a private chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Shelter, protector of sailors. Inside, this rural church is decorated with a magnificent altarpiece dating to the mid-18th century.
There is a private well and a watermill.

Internal
An archway with solid wooden doors leads through into a large internal courtyard. The western three level complex used to be dwelt by the landlord. In fact, the owner lived on the ground and the first floor, whereas the second floor housed the servants room and a supplementary kitchen.
Sun terraces offer a wonderful viewing position and where accessed by means of a noted local architectural feature, the Trapani suspended staircase (or simply, Scala Trapanese). The three remaining sides of the court consist of extensive arched store rooms, barns and olive presses. The entire complex is built in the local sandstone and roofed with the ancient false monk system consisting of a combination of wooden beams, canes, plaster, and terracotta tiles, allowing for light w The eastern roof is topped by a high relief figurine depicting the Almighty.

Having been dwelt until recently, electricity is connected and was upgraded to the latest system a couple of years ago. Water is connected too. And the telephone is available
