The Future
Previously the economy was largely agricultural and while this still provides world class produce at cheap prices, Sicily has now diversified into more rewarding industries: mainly tourism.
Sicily’s brand image has had to deal with negative perceptions that are out of date with the reality of the situation. There has been an increase in awareness of the real Sicily. More people are realising the true beauty of the island and demand for property is increasing, naturally along with the prices as well. Many areas are undiscovered as yet and will afford bargains to those wishing to be leaders rather than followers.
Infrastructure investment
Fontanarossa (Catania’s airport) is scheduled for a second runway which will allow more flights.
A new international airport is being constructed at Comiso, this is due for completion in may 2007.
Low cost airlines are looking to expand their services to Sicily
Planning laws are in place to ensure that unspoilt areas retain their uniqueness in the future.
Golf courses are planned to satisfy a growing demand
Sicily’s awareness of the importance of tourism is changing policy and planning attitudes, providing more for those coming to Sicily. However there is no desire to have the bland, Spanish costas new build approach which blurs national identity; Sicilians remain tremendously proud of their heritage and identity.
